Identifying different parts of speech in word families Today’s Focus: Suffixes

Sometimes when you are reading in a foreign language you find a word that you are not quite sure about. It’s very possible that you know the root word or another word in the word family. Sometimes the suffix can be a clue to that word’s part of speech (noun, verb, adjective etc.) Good readers become familiar with word families, and one effective method is to become familiar with common suffixes.



Clues to Parts of Speech…..

Below is a list of common suffixes (word endings) that help indicate what part of speech a word is. Sometimes a word can be identified as a noun, adjective, adverb, or verb by its suffix.
